Henriëtte Dijkinga geniet al vele jaren faam vanwege haar prachtig ontworpen hoeden. In 1997 was er zelfs een creatie van haar te bewonderen tijdens de expositie Chapeau Chapeaux! in het Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Ook is zij regelmatig te zien geweest in diverse tv-programma’s, waaronder Glamourland.

Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (1869 - 1955) The son of a wealthy family of Armenian merchants, Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian was born in Scatter, the present day Üsküdar area of Istanbul, on March 29th, 1869. He was educated at a local school until he was thirteen, studied in Marseilles and later went to King's College, London, where, in 1887, he was awarded a diploma with distinction from the Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In Memorium: Angelina Brantusa

We recently received news that Angelina Bratusa has died. When I last spoke to her ten days before, she had company in the house that she shared with her mother in Zagreb. People were coming to her for help, which she gave in the form of astrological consultation. Although in pain, she sounded upbeat, amazed that she could still help others while in her condition.

She said that the years in Amsterdam were the best years of her life, although those years were also difficult. Angelina's passion for promoting her mother's artwork was all-consuming. By her own admission, Angelina neglected her physical health until it was too late to treat the cancer.

In recognition of her help managing the ABC Treehouse and curating the ABC Treehouse Gallery in 2004 and 2005, we would like to host a memorial spot where people who knew her might post memories they'd like to share. Please send and email with your memories to lynn@abc.nl. Personal messages for her mother can be sent to Branka Brmbota, Bauerova 24, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia.

In January, 2006, Angelina wrote, "My only possible way of living this life is to be a good and honest person, to help to people if I only can, to observe my self and to check my behavior and my words from time to time - I am trying to handle from my conscious and good heart and not from my unconsciousness. That is for me the only way, and for this I pray, that more and more people in this world will start to believe and handle from a good and positive source. The good source cannot be the destructive one."

The Casualties in Amsterdam Melkweg 12 August 2007

Alle punks, hardcore kids, skins, metalheads en krakers verzamelen, want The Casualties komen weer naar Nederland. De vier punkers uit New York maken al sinds 1990 harde streetpunk.
Dankzij hun onuitputtelijke energie en het vele touren speelden ze met alle grote bands en op alle grote festivals. Hun laatste album ‘Under Attack’ werd geproduceerd door de producer van Black Flag en Rise Against en is ouderwets hard. Live doen ze daar niet voor onder; met hun teksten over bier en politiek en bijbehorende sloopneigingen weten ze overal een stevige pit te bouwen. lees meer

Alderliefste in Vondelpark Openluchtteater 12 August 2007

Alderliefste is een Nederlandse coverband uit Amsterdam, die bestaat uit Gerard Alderliefste (leadzang en gitaar), Luc de Bruin (drums en zang) en Arnd Broeke (bas en zang). De band is opgericht in 1993 en maakt vooral covers van bekende hits. Ze treden veel op in diverse Amsterdamse cafés en uitgaansgelegenheden, waaronder De Heeren van Aemstel en Luxembourg. Hun eerste album uit 1995 is een live album opgenomen in Luxembourg met als titel Life in Luxembourg. In de loop der tijd maken ze ook eigen Nederlandstalige nummers. In mei 1997 wordt de eerste single Na vannacht door platenmaatschappij Columbia uitgebracht, dat een bescheiden hit wordt. In januari 1998 volgt Incompleet. In 1999 krijgt de band een contract bij het S.M.A.R.T.-label, waaronder ook artiesten en bands als Acda en de Munnik, Grof Geschut en Arthur Umgrove zijn ondergebracht. Op 8 juli 1999 verschijnt het tweede cover-album Alderliefste met live-nummers opgenomen in het Amsterdamse Werktheater. Aan dit album werkt ook Peter Schön mee als toetsenist. In februari doet de band mee aan het Nationaal Songfestival met het nummer Evenwicht, geschreven door Jochem Fluitsma en Eric van Tijn, maar het nummer haalt het niet. De band krijgt hierdoor wel landelijke bekendheid en treedt steeds vaker op in programma's als 'De vrienden van Amstel live. In 2003 schrijft de band een Franstalig album, waarvan de nummers tijdens de GrandCafé's Tournee ten gehore werden gebracht. De tour eindigde in Parijs, waar alle nummers van het album voor het eerst in zijn geheel ten gehore werden gebracht. In november 2004 werd het album onder de titel Je maintiendrai uitgebracht.

Amsterdam explodes with color as city celebrates Gay Pride festival

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: Gays, lesbians, bisexuals and a large contingent of heterosexuals are putting on their brightest plumage, and a rainbow fleet is set to sail through Amsterdam's historic canals Saturday, as the city celebrates its annual Gay Pride festival.

The flotilla and party afterward is one of the biggest of the year in Amsterdam, and one in which the city upholds its reputation as one of Europe's gayest capitals. DJs pump music from ships packed with dancing partygoers, vying for who can put on the best show or provide the most outrageous theme. Visitors can expect to see plenty of men wearing leather thong underwear, cowboy hats, disco glitter, and nothing else. This year's party will be celebrated with extra emotion after a spate of gay-bashing attacks has surprised a city renowned for its tolerance. "Social acceptance of homosexuality is not complete," said Tijn Elferink, spokesman for the country's national gay organization COC" . "Gay people still can be beaten up, just like that, for holding hands or being in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.read more

In another first, a boat for homosexual teenagers will also sail. Mayor Job Cohen initially refused a permit for the boat, arguing that underage participants were inappropriate. But, in the best Dutch fashion, a compromise emerged: at least one parent will accompany each child. Cohen himself will be sailing on the city's new boat, "Schelto Patijn," named for the city's previous mayor, who died last month. Patijn famously described Amsterdam as the "Gay Way to Europe."

Ubuntu is a concept in the Bantu Language. It is about the essence of Humanness.
Simply put: ‘people are people through other people’. I am human because I belong. This concept acknowledges both the rights and the responsibilities of each citizen in promoting individual and societal well-being.

The exhibit will showcase South African Artists, including some who now reside in The Netherlands, and will include workshops, traditional dance performances, theatre, music performances, film, discussions and poetry readings. This exhibition is an expression of the artists’ joy and struggles in being born in a country which was tormented by Apartheid. Art is their medication in healing.

Gossip in Amsterdam ; Melkweg 27 June 2007

Toen het Engelse muziekblad NME eind vorig jaar zangeres Beth Ditto van Gossip uitriep tot coolste vrouw in de muziekindustrie, waren weinig muziekliefhebbers in Engeland het daar niet mee eens. Het energieke trio uit Arkansas wist in 2006 in Engeland door te breken tot de allerhipste muziekkringen. Begrijpelijk, want sinds de gloriedagen van Courtney Love was men niet meer een dame met zo'n grote persoonlijkheid tegengekomen op het podium. Germaine Greer applauds us and The Gossip singer's 'courage'

NME's cover of The Gossip's Beth Ditto has been praised by feminist icon Germaine Greer.

Greer is perhaps most famous for her groundbreaking 1970 feminist tome 'The Female Eunuch'. More recently she surprised the world by appearing in the 2005 edition of the UK's 'Celebrity Big Brother' . Writing in the The Guardian, Greer declared: "NME had enough courage to put the coolest woman on the planet on the cover, and Beth Ditto has given them the kind of picture that they can use:attention getting but certainly not obscene." Leszek Sczaniecki "Oostblok Connections". Leszek Sczaniecki was gedurende 10 jaar als fotograaf verbonden aan de Poolse theatergroep Teatr Ósmego Dnia. Sinds zijn vestiging in Nederland (1987) maakt hij als freelance fotograaf foto’s van diverse theaterproducties in binnen- en buitenland. Het is dan ook geen toeval dat in zijn fotografisch werk het documentaire portret centraal staat.

W139 presenteert een tentoonstelling van schilderijen en tekeningen die is samengesteld door Sarah Verbeek. De schilders die ze heeft uitgekozen, lijken een ongecompliceerde verhouding tot hun medium te hebben. Ze houden van schilderen en ze doen het ook. Het zijn geen 'schilderbeesten' die een' roes' nodig hebben om te kunnen werken. Het zijn geen traagheidsfeteshisten. Ze voelen geen noodzaak om zich tot fotografie te verhouden. Hun werk is geen commentaar of verantwoording. Het is niet verkrampt en ook niet vormloos. Er komen mensen, bomen, driehoeken en vlekken in voor. De verf is dun en de gebaren zijn rustig. Wie goed naar deze schilderijen kijkt, kan zien dat kunst een vanzelfsprekende menselijke behoefte is, en dat word wel eens vergeten. Gijs Frieling, Directeur W139

Letz Zep wordt beschouwd als één van de beste Led Zeppelin cover bands ter wereld door critici én Led Zeppelin fans. Zelfs de legendarische Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant is weg van de band. Zijn reactie toen hij Letz Zep live aan het werk zag luidde: “I walked in, I saw me”. Letz Zep tourt al een aantal jaar langs de grote zalen van Europa en heeft in februari 2007 zelfs voor een uitzinnige menigte van 15.000 fans in Venezuela opgetreden.Letz Zep bestaat uit vier getalenteerde en ervaren muzikanten: zanger Billy Kulke, gitarist Chris Cawte, drummer Simon Jeffrey en bassist/ keyboardspeler Steve Turner. Voordat de bandleden Letz Zep vormden hebben ze ieder al hun sporen verdiend met andere bands. De Junior Chamber Amsterdam International (JCIAI) organiseert samen met Unicef een tentoonstelling en veilingvan het werk van aanstormend talent.
